Feature of the Week: The Lunar Cycles By Dawn Elizabeth The moon, nick-named the Queen of Mystery. You never know where she’ll pop up in the Sky. One thing is for certain, it takes little experience in living to recognize the powerful influences and effects of the moon on all living things. From the changing of the ocean tides, the growth spurt of plants to the cycles of women…it only takes moments into a 12-hour emergency room shift to know there is a full moon.
By knowing the cycles of the moon, we get to know ourselves better and begin to recognize our own patterns, for better of for worse…and then go on to make the necessary adjustments. Following the moon cycles can bring us deeper in touch with the intuitive knowledge that we all hold within our ancient and all-knowing selves, providing us the ultimate sense of balance. There are 8 lunar phases in all...the New Moon, Crescent Moon, Waxing Quarter moon, Gibbous moon, Full Moon, Disseminating Moon, Waning Quarter Moon and finally, the Balsamic Moon phase. All eight phases are completed within a 28-day lunar cycle. For simplicity sake, below is a discussion of the four major phases (each occurring approximately every seven days). For more information about the other four supporting phases, please email Dawn at astrologyspeaks@hotmail.com with your questions.
New Moon New beginnings, initiation, birth, a time to bring forth, time to start projects, start of a new cycle for the month. A feeling of energy, impulsivity, spontaneous planning. Fresh possibilities. Plant ‘seeds’ of new intentions…. Waxing Quarter Moon A time showing what changes or adjustments are needed to take advantage of the ‘new beginnings’ initiated during the New Moon. A time of things coming to a head. A time to go with or adjust your ideas. Time to build, create and plan. Give sunlight, water and fertilizer to the ‘seeds’ you planted during the New Moon. Full Moon A time of culmination, time for things to reach fullness, birthing. The trees are flowering. It's a time to balance the oppositions. Emotions run high during this time. Howl at the moon. Give gratitude for all that you currently have and all that you intend, as though it has already manifested. The full moon is a time of romance, fertilization, relationships, emotions and feelings. Full bloom. The fruit is ripe for the picking… Balsamic Moon Begin now to tie up loose ends and resolve old issues, before the next New Moon. Create the final outcome, savor the last satisfying taste of the ripened fruits of the Full Moon. Demonstrate dynamic conscious movement to create the final outcome. Your belly is full. The feast has come to a close. Time to rest, reflect, meditate and honor the silence. Take some time alone, go deep within. Contemplate, clear and release. Connect with Spirit. Another cycle has come to an end. The ground must be cleared away of its death and debris, in preparation for the next New Moon phase…
Following are some suggestions for physical/spiritual things you can do to enhance each cycle... New Moon Phase Ideas Light a candle. Honor the cycle. Use whatever tools you use to connect with…crystals, sage, aromatherapy. On the day of the New Moon…take action…seize the moment. Make some gesture, big or small and plant your seeds of intent. Look at your birth chart. Where does the New Moon fall? What areas of your life are begging to be recharged and rejuvenated? Make a list…then start taking well thought out, disciplined steps toward your goals. Don’t despair if your energies feel low or you feel a little down. This is natural on the day of the New Moon. It is the darkest night of the month. You are right on track. In a day or two, look for the tiny Crescent Moon in the sky. The first glimpse of light...give thanks. Waxing Quarter Phase Ideas Remember that list? Are you comfortable with it. Do your ‘seeds of intention’ need watering…maybe some sunlight? Do you still have a taste for what you planted? Have your seeds sprouted? Or, is it time to make some adjustments? What area in your chart is illuminated by the waxing phase? There may be some clues or gifts there. Use them. Get out there and tend to your ‘crops.’ Imagine how delicious and satisfying the ‘fruits’ of your labor will taste. See yourself surrounded in abundance. Go out and get it! Full Moon Phase Ideas Light a candle. Honor the cycle. Give thanks, express gratitude and honor Spirit. Behold the beautiful flowering of the seeds that you planted. Feast on the fruit. Fill your belly. Reap what you have sown. In what area of your life is the Full Moon shining? Is it the 10th house of career and social standing? Don’t forget to look also to the opposite house. Remember to balance the energies. If it’s the 10th house…then also integrate the 4th house of home, roots and family. Balance your career life, professional life and social standing with the needs of your deepest inner core, your roots, your family and your home front. Shine like a diamond in the sky. Dance, sing, feast and revel in the abundance. Balsamic Moon Ideas Light a candle. Cleanse your energy field (sage is wonderful for this). Connect with Spirit through meditation. Release, let go. Allow ‘death’ (metaphorically, of course) to come to whatever must ‘die.’ Receive a glimpse or vision of the new ‘birth.’ Remember, that when old doors close, new ones swing open ~ and sometimes the new ones won’t swing open until the old ones have been slammed shut. Where does the Balsamic Moon fall in your birth chart? What do you need to let go of in that arena of your life? Prepare for the New Moon.

This day was created in 1993 to remind people that Astrology is the oldest symbolic system of western culture still alive. "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace." (Eccl. 3:1-8) The Value of Astrology The purpose of astrology is to intensify your spiritual awareness so that you can awaken the potential of your birth vision. Astrology illuminates the meaning behind life events and cycles you are experiencing and brings an awareness of one’s innate gifts and longings. It also describes the path to authenticity. Astrology is not about predicting the future. It is about living fully in the here and now Universe with purpose toward your soul’s evolution and growth. Astrology is a precise language. When interpreted by a competent astrologer, astrology reveals insights that no other field of study can rival. Thousands of years before recorded history, astrology was used by the ancient people of Babylonia, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, China and the Mayans. It’s wisdom has been passed down through the ages. Live your truth and open to the presence of the living flow of eternity. Unfold into your life purpose. ~ Dawn Elizabeth ~ Astrology and the Bible The Bible states that God made the heavenly bodies to show us "signs" of his intentions. These signs can be read by anyone who knows how to interpret them. Astrology is about interpreting these signs in the motions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars. The Bible is filled with references to astrology. This is because astrology was widely accepted as truth in Biblical times. Christians who believe that astrology goes “against religion” would be surprised to learn that the Bible is filled with astrology. Jesus himself made numerous references to astrology. "There shall be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars." - Jesus Christ, Luke 21:25 " And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as SIGNS to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the Earth." And it was so." (Gen. 1:14-15)"And there shall be SIGNS in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the Earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the Earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with great power and glory.” (Luke 21:25-27) "The HEAVENS declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork. Day after day utters his speech and night after night shows his knowledge. There is no tongue or language where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the Earth and their words to the ends of the world. In them (the heavens) he has set a tabernacle for the sun.” (Psalm 19:1-4) One of the great astrological stories in the Bible is the story of the Star of Bethlehem. It is written that the star was a sign from God signaling the birth of the Messiah into the world. The three Magi, Persian astrologer-kings, determined the time of this birth by the position of this star. In 1600, Johannes Kepler hypothesized that this star was actually a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. Confirmed by modern astrology, this symbolism ties in with the prophecies of that era concerning a Messiah amongst the Jews. The conjunctions occurred at the end of Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is the planet of kings. Saturn is the planet that rules the Jews, thereby giving the king of the Jews. This was a very infrequent triple conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn and it occurred in the year 7 B.C. History of Astrology The concept of the zodiac is very ancient, with roots in the early cited cultures of Mesopotamia. Astrology is, more than likely, the oldest religion created by humans. The first twelve-sign zodiacs were named after the gods of these cultures. The Greeks adopted astrology from the Babylonians, and the Romans, in turn, adopted astrology from the Greeks. These cultures renamed the signs of the Mesopotamian zodiac to symbols of their own mythologies. This is why the familiar zodiac of the contemporary West bears names encompasses a great span of human history and many cultures. The belief in a connection between the cosmos and terrestrial matters has also played an important part in human history…. Astrology in Babylonia The history of astrology can now be traced back to ancient Babylonia, and indeed to the earliest phases of Babylonian history, in the third millennium B.C. Hellenistic Astrology With the introduction of Greek culture into Egypt, both astronomy and astrology were actively cultivated in the region of the Nile during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. After the occupation by Alexander the Great in 332BC, Egypt came under Greek rule and influence, and it was in Alexandrian Egypt where horoscopic astrology first appeared. The endeavour to trace the horoscope of the individual from the position of the planets and stars at the time of birth represents the most significant contribution of the Greeks to astrology. European and Middle Eastern Astrology The history of astrology in Europe and the Middle East are inextricably linked, with each region contributing to astrological theories and continually influencing each other over time. Bouché-Leclercq, Cumont and Boll hold that the middle of the 4th century B.C. is when Babylonian astrology began to firmly enter western culture. Astrology was further developed by the Arabs from the 7th to the 13th century , and in the Europe of the 14th and 15th centuries astrologers were dominating influences at court. The Mayans of Central America and the Aztecs also developed their own form of astrology. Other cultures and civilizations around the world also developed their own astrological systems independently. Astrology through the Middle Ages Astrology became embodied in the Kabbalistic lore of Jews and Christians, and through these and other channels came to be the substance of the astrology of the Middle Ages. In time this would lead to Church prelates and Protestant princes using the services of astrologers. This system was referred to as "judicial astrology", and its practitioners believed that the position of heavenly bodies influenced the affairs of mankind. It is now usually regarded as a pseudo-science. During the Renaissance, a form of "scientific astrology" evolved in which court astrologers would compliment their use of horoscopes with genuine discoveries about the nature of the universe. Many individuals now credited with having overturned the old astrological order, such as Galileo Galilei, Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, were themselves practicing astrologers. Astrology in India T he documented history of Jyotisha begins with the interaction of Indian and Hellenistic cultures in the Indo-Greek period. The oldest surviving treatises, such as the Yavanajataka or the Brihat-Samhita, date to the early centuries CE. The oldest astrological treatise in Sanskrit is the Yavanajataka ("Sayings of the Greeks"), a versification by Sphujidhvaja in 269/270 CE of a now lost translation of a Greek treatise by Yavanesvara during the 2nd century CE under the patronage of the Western Satrap Saka king Rudradaman I.Chinese Astrology Astrology is believed to have originated in China about the 3rd millennium BC. Astrology was always traditionally regarded very highly in China, and indeed Confucius is said to have treated astrology with respect saying: "Heaven sends down its good or evil symbols and wise men act accordingly". The 60 year cycle combining the five elements with the twelve animal signs of the zodiac has been documented in China since at least the time of the Shang (Shing or Yin) dynasty (ca 1766BC - CA 1050BC). Oracles bones have been found dating from that period with the date according to the 60 year cycle inscribed on them, along with the name of the diviner and the topic being divined about. One of the most famous astrologers in China was Tsou Yen who lived in around 300 BC, and who wrote: "When some new dynasty is going to arise, heaven exhibits auspicious signs for the people". Astrology in China also became combined with the Chinese form of geomancy known as Feng shui . Astrology in the United States In the United States, a great surge of popular interest in astrology took place between 1900 through 1949. A very popular astrologer based in New York City named Evangeline Adams helped feed the public's thirst for astrology readings with many accurate forecasts, her biographers say. A famous court case involving Adams, who was arrested and charged with illegal fortune-telling in 1914 - was later dismissed when Adams correctly read the horoscope of the judge's son with only a birthdate. Her acquittal set an American precedent that if astrologers practiced in a professional manner that they were not guilty of any wrong-doing. The earliest years of the 20th century met with a hunger for astrology. Astrologers of the time, such as Alan Leo, Sepharial (also known as Walter Gorn Old), "Paul Cheisnard" and Charles Carter, among others, further led the surge of interest in astrology by wide distribution of astrological journals, text, papers, and textbooks of astrology throughout the United States. The serious and complex writings on astrological practice and concepts in America progressed from the turn-of-the-century years and into a new period of popular expansion in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Many complex astrological materials were simplified to attempt to carve a clear line through points of contention and controversy. The result of this attempt was to "simplify astrology" in the minds of professionals and gave the impression of settled and agreed positions on many points that were not resolved. The period between 1920-1940 gave way to the popular media jumping on board the great public interest in astrology. Publishers realized that millions of readers were interested in astrological forecasts and the interest grew ever more intense with the advent of America's entry into the First World War. The war heightened interest in astrology. Journalists began to write articles based on character descriptions and astrological "forecasts" were published in newspapers based on the one and only factor known to the public: the month and day of birth, as taken from the position of the Sun when a person is born. The result of this practice led to the entertaining, yet largely misleading modern-day Sun-Sign astrology columns and forecasts. It further expanded to some astrological books and magazines in later decades of the 20th century. Unfortunately, it is this very type of astrology which has served to discredit the field altogether. Many people simply are unaware of what “real” astrology is and what it can do for them, as they are falsely led to believe that the astrology in your typical Sun-sign forecast is “it.” People are not really that gullible, but are sadly uneducated to the fact that those astrology columns are basically for pure entertainment purposes only. It is absolutely preposterous that every Leo on earth could expect to have the same kind of day or week. Astrology and the Sciences Astrology played an important part in Medieval medicine; most educated physicians were trained in at least the basics of astrology to use in their practice. Under Greek influences (born from views originating in Babylonia), the scope of astrology was enlarged until it was brought into connection with practically all of the known sciences: botany, chemistry, zoology, mineralogy, anatomy and medicine. Colors, metals, stones, plants, drugs and animal life of all kinds were each associated with one or another of the planets and placed under that planet’s “rulership” The fate of the individual, as that feature of the future which had a supreme interest, led to the association of the planets with different parts of the body and so with medicine . From the planets the same association of ideas was applied to the constellations of the zodiac . The zodiac came to be regarded as the prototype of the human body, the different parts of which all had their corresponding section in the zodiac itself. The head was placed in the first sign of the zodiac, Aries, the Ram; and the feet in the last sign, Pisces, the Fishes. Between these two extremes the other parts and organs of the body were distributed among the remaining signs of the zodiac. With human anatomy thus connected with the planets, with constellations, and with single stars, medicine became an integral part of astrology. Diseases and disturbances of the ordinary functions of the organs were attributed to the influences of planets and explained as due to conditions observed in a constellation or in the position of a star. ************************************************************************ Dare to Dream a Better Dream: 2012 Speculation By Dawn Elizabeth Have you tuned into the news, the discovery or history channel lately? Just the other night, I found myself tuned into a doom’s day prophecy surrounding the December 21, 2012 date of reference. I don’t know why I watched it. I typically try to keep myself out of that negative flow and in a state of possibility and opportunity, versus a state of doom, futility and hopelessness…consistent themes for a blood thirsty media and fear mongering and fearful society. Anyway, this particular 2012 doom’s day program probably wasn’t much different from any of the others…sharing the prophecies of the Mayans ( at least as they are interpreting them), the “half shaman/half demon” Merlin, the teachings of the bible and many others. Yes, folks, if we choose to buy into this negative dramatization, it seems inevitable that the world will come to a disastrous and destructive end in the year 2012. This tale of woe reflects a hopeless belief that we are all here only to be punished for our very existence and our imperfectness, and that the end is closing in. Isn’t it sad that so many still believe in a Creator who is vengeful and punitive in nature? Whatever happened to benevolence and forgiveness? The program introduced us to a relatively new piece of technology called the “web-bot.” It was purported that this web-based computer program had the capability to tap the collective unconscious thoughts of our world. A tall order to be sure. The web-bot, it was reported, was an excellent predictor of pending doom and disaster, and it went on to point out the current “victorious predictions” it had to its credit. At first, this seemed somewhat fantastic, unbelievable and impressive all at the same time. Once, however, it was explained that this program scanned the web 24/7 for commonalities in thoughts and words and subjects splashed across the technological airways, I felt both saddened and somewhat angry all at once. Is this the best dream that we are all capable of coming up with? Are we no different than the vampire-like media, looking to suck the life-blood from all creatures…great and small… turning us all into vampires ourselves, blood thirsty for more and more violence and destruction? Pisces encourages us to dream a better dream. Many spiritual and metaphysical paths teach that our thoughts have the power to manifest on the earthly plane. In other words, if you can imagine something, you can create it. At some point, we have to ask ourselves, both as individuals and as a collective, “Is this the best visionary dream we can come up with?” What if it’s possible to create a better prophecy? What if we don’t have to believe that we are doomed to be destroyed by and angry ”god” who will cast us all to hell for our sins…drown us in a tidal wave of destruction, crush us under the rubble of a horrific earthquake or blow us into oblivion by the forceful winds of a hurricane? What if we paint our own picture of abundance, joy, love, peace and good will to all? What if we dared to imagine a world without hunger, greed or suffering? What if all beings could live in harmony? What if we could evolve into a state of consciousness where we did not have to experience pain and loss in order to appreciate joy and abundance? I invite everyone to set aside a little time each day, or even each week to cast a positive energy into that ever evolving collective consciousness. I would bet, if you have read this far, that you are one of the many “Light-Workers,” as my friend Jennye would call you…those who spread peace and healing energy and shine light into the dark corners those troubled souls. It is up to you and those like you to dream a better dream. God bless you. ********************************************************************************* Peace, anyone? November 2008 What if we could all experience Peace ~ all of the time? I always hear people say that we need to experience discord and chaos in order to appreciate Peace when we have it. What if those people are wrong? It is clear that the Universe works in mysterious ways. Sometimes I think we form our own particular beliefs just so that we can feel comforted and make sense of all the pain and suffering in the world. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no dooms day kind of person. In fact, I am quite optimistic most of the time. But even with all the optimism and enthusiasm, I would be completely asleep and numb if I was not always aware of the inequities that divide us. I always question why some people seem to come into this world and suffer so much more than others, either with physical or mental illness, abuse, neglect, slavery, imprisonment, torture, or severe poverty or starvation. Some would say that it’s their karmic path. Maybe that makes it all better…to believe that there is something we have done in the past that now justifies the present circumstance. Some might say that everyone “chooses” their path before they arrive. Maybe that sooths them into believing that we get only what we have asked for. Despite the many beliefs and justifications for all that we see and feel in this world…I would love to know what it feels like for everyone to experience Peace simultaneously and continuously. I would love to feel what it’s like to know that every living being had enough to eat, someone to love and someone who loves them, and a comfortable to sleep. I would love to feel what it’s like to know that no one will suffer from abuse, pain or disease. What would it be like to experience only love…and to never feel hatred? I would love to see everyone experiencing joy and happiness and freedom…all of the time. I guess, for now, that is just a pleasant dream world. I wonder what would happen if we all had that same dream? Do you think we could manifest all those kind and loving things and be able to appreciate them…even in the absence of all the unpleasant things? It’s hard to say, I suppose. I would still like to believe in magic, believe in miracles. I would still like to believe that Love can heal the world. Some say we would be bored without chaos and drama, upset and war, suffering and loss…that we need the negative to realize the positive. I don’t know. I would like to think that we are creative enough to seek excitement in healthier and more positive ways. I would be willing to risk it just for a day of peace, happiness and freedom for every human being, plant and animal. No matter how silly it may seem, I will never stop hoping, dreaming and wishing…. Until next time, Dawn Elizabeth ********************************************************************************
