Astro 101 by Dawn Elizabeth It's that time of year when we celebrate the summer soltice and usher in the warmth and nurturing qualities of Cancer. Happy Birthday to all of you sensitive souls who celebrate your birth under the sign of the Crab.
Ever wonder why it is the Crab that stands as Cancer's symbol? It is all about the protective shell. Cancer is here to learn the principal of unconditional love and open the heart to the oneness of all life. In doing so, the Crab is vulnerable. Sometimes love hurts. When the pain becomes greater than the love, Cancer must retreat and protect itself.
Cancer is the archetype of the healer, the mother, the nurturer, matriarch, cook and counselor. That's a pretty tall order! Here to anchor our hearts in the living flow of eternal and unconditional love, Cancer is opening to the "feeling" dimension of our human experience...awakening the heart to the depths of love, acceptance and forgiveness.
The Moon is the reflective luminary that represents Cancer's urge to feel emotion. The Moon represents our needs, inner contentment, instincts, reactions and attachments. Our ancestral memory is imprinted on our Soul. The moon describes how we want to be loved, nurtured and cared for....how we get our needs met and in what style we meet the needs of others.
The realm of life experience that Cancer represents is in the 4th house of our natal chart, otherwise known as the Nadir. This is the deepest point of our existence, with links to the past and connected to our very heart center. It is here where we experience soul activation, establish roots, home and family. Cancer, the Moon and the 4th house are where we experience emotional contentment and connect with the source of life.
Cancer's energetic flow is outward water...the initiation of emotions and the creation of sensitivity. Cancer can be quite the go-getter and aggressive in its efforts to get what it wants. For the most part, Cancer is concerned with the feeling of security, and will protect that sense of security ferociously, even if that means being a bit pushy and manipulative to hold on to whatever or whomever supplies that feeling of safety and security.
Fortunately, Cancer is happy to provide us with lots of love, understaning and healing. Always accepting with open arms and ready to listen our problems and provide a safe haven, some nourishing food and a shoulder to cry on... Don't forget however, that the Crab really needs to receive exactly what it offers in return.
Each sign has both harmonious and inharmonious psychological expressions. Cancer is no exception. Before giving a grand list of both, I feel it important to note that we are speaking strictly about a single archetype here...the Cancer archetype. When someone asks "What sign are you?" they are referring to your Sun sign. As many of you have gathered, our Sun sign is but a sliver of who we really are as a whole. We all have a moon sign, a Mars (which describes our desire, our will), a Venus (which describes our love nature and our attitude toward money). We are complex beings...and we ALL express Cancer energy in some aspect of our existence..some more..some less. So, that in mind, the list I am about to give you is pure in its nature, but those with strong Cancer energy will likely resonate strongly to the expressions.
When acting harmoniously, the Cancer archetype is compassionate, caring, domestic, comfort-loving, food-oriented, family oriented, supportive of others, security-oriented, sensitive, emotional, intuitive, healing, empathic, sentimental, nurturing, protective, motherly, nourishing, humble and classical.
When behaving in a less harmonious way, the Cancer archetype can be crabby, over-protective, afraid, dependent, illogical, attached to the past, insecure, cranky, worried, snobby, overly sensitive, emotional, self-indulgent, shy, manipulative, clannish, moody, hysterical, clinging and old fashioned.
Sound familiar to anyone?
So, there you have it...a quick and dirty description of the sign of Cancer. We are of course, only skimming the surface. There is always more than meets the eye.
